Magdalena Bauch
I am German and live in Germany
I’m a professional Spanish-to-German translator with a long-held passion for Hispanic culture, language and literature. My area of particular expertise is literary translation and academic translation.
Having always had an affinity for languages, I decided to pursue a dual language degree in Spanish and German at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Moreover, a further reason for having chosen this degree was due to my love for the culture, language variation and literature associated with the Hispanic speaking world.
Since graduating, I have thus far worked at various translation agencies as an editor and terminologist. During my time at these agencies, I gained an insight into the translation market, the work processes involved when translating and familiarised myself with CAT tools. My experience at these agencies acted as confirmation for pursuing a career-path as a freelance translator. I decided to take the state-certified exam for translators in Germany, after that I could be sworn as a translator by the District court of Berlin and am now allowed to translate public documents. Furthermore, I am a member of the Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators of Germany (Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer e. V).
Translation has been a tradition in my family, seeing as both my grandma and aunt studied translation. For this reason, I have always had an affiliation with translation.
My first interaction with translating academic texts came through a former professor of mine who asked me to translate an article of theirs, which was later published in the book “20 Jahre Mauerfall, Diskurse, Rueckbauten, Perspektiven” (Peter Lang, 2012). Additionally, I participated in a literary translation seminar, which lead to the publication of the book “La gata andaluza y otros textos en prosa (Casus Belli, 2015) by the German author Hilde Domin.
